The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) housing market has certainly experienced significant change over the past several years. Provincial intensification policies have led to a greater focus on mid and high rise condominium apartment activity while a diminishing land supply has placed price pressures on the single detached, semi-detached and townhome markets. As a result of these market factors we have seen a shift in housing direction, essentially towards a greater emphasis on higher density housing, namely condominium apartments. In 2013, fifty-seven percent (57%) of all new home sales in the GTA were condominium apartments…in almost every market area they provided an affordable housing option. However, a closer look at the market statistics shows that the one region within the Greater Toronto Area that has “bucked the trend’ towards higher density housing is Durham Region. Durham Region continues to offer a full range of affordable housing choices, ranging from condominium apartments to single detached homes….if you’re looking for an affordability in a low density housing form Durham Region is the place to be…..
